Alexandre Herchcovitch

Alexandre Herchcovitch is another show I've always been curious about but never able to shoot. So with hours between shows up at the tents, I decided to run through and see what was up. I don't know if it was all the Women and Supreme girls or the floral prints on a wet rainy day, or even my Italian crush, but it turned out to be a lot of fun.

Kelly Cutrone was there and for all you City fans, FYI, it was the most organized backstage I've ever worked.

Alana Zimmer, Anne V, Darya, Viviane Orth, Bruna, Sheila Marquez, Yulia, Amanda Laine, Heloise Guerin, Alyona, Karolin Wolter and the coolest of them all
Daiane Conterato.

Backstage Derek Lam

So here's a firsthand look at what it's like being backstage just before a show starts. And a quiet cooperative one at that. James Scully (who is in charge of this show) appreciates and respects the job of the photographer and lets them do what they're there to do. For this reason, this show is always a joy to shoot.

Here you have seasoned photographer's Robert Fairer of Vogue, Style.com's Greg Kessler, Jason Lloyd Evans,
James Cochrane from the UK, Matt Lever and a handful of others. All working in tandem to get their shots.

And if you look real close you can see my favorite backstage crush. Giovanni Bianco. I've been tryin' to get him to make-out with me for two seasons and he won't do it. I'm hoping by next Fall he'll give in.

Phillip Lim FW 09

Phillip Lim was wild! I don't know if it was Tanya D, Naty, Matvey and Bastiaan, or Lissy Trullie and her band (who totally rocked it out during the show,) but it was a total blast! I got there and immediately passed the camera to Naty, who passed it off to Matvey, before handing it back to me. I have so much video from this show I'm surprised I've got any pics at all.

Of course it's always great catching up with Phillip and I was shocked to hear it wasn't Lissy who had inspired the look, but rather Supreme newcomer Tao Okamoto (who of course I never grabbed a shot of.) Which is a testament to how much fun I was having backstage.

In fact, so much fun I didn't even get a chance to catch up with two of my favorite boys. So shout-out's to DNA's Niels Raabe and Jason Wilder from NY Models. And BIG UP's to Phillip on a great show!

Pancake Party

The funnest thing I did all week was pop by Ieke's for a Pancake party. (Second annual actually.) It was just what the doctor ordered after a full day of shows and an empty stomach. I always love seeing her and I finally got to hear about her show in Berlin.

It was such a chill night and the place was filled with people I love. Kim Noorda, Sonny Vandevelde, Jonas Kesseler, Matthew Hitt, David and Georgia, and Eliza Cummings, who I fell head-over-heels in love with. And is far more British and proper than I ever would've imagined. Such a fun night. Thanks Ieke! Click here for Sonny's pics!

Backstage Marc Jacobs

There's nothing I hate more than when someone holds a video camera up to your face and you stand there posing because you think their snapping a shot. So how did I spend my time backstage at Marc? Accidentally doing the same thing. (That and searching for a place to light up with Lara Stone.) And only after Hannelore and I realized that Natasha V hadn't captured any of their footage together.

And yes I am fully aware that this video is choppy and fast and all over the place, but I had so many good snippets I just couldn't let any of them go to waste.

Marc by Marc FW 09

Marc by Marc is always fun. The casting is young and fresh and loaded with all the up-and-coming new faces. AND (thankfully) Michelle Lee added a whole slew of big girls. Lily, Vlada, Stam, Alana, Kim Noorda, Sasha and Freja. Who I first shot at this same show my first season backstage, and looked amazing.

And then of course a whole other rung of faves. Matvey, Naty, Alyona, Cole (tats and all) Jourdan, Eniko, Ali, Karmen, Siri and Tanya D. Rogier was on video for this show, however stay tuned, as I haven't gone over the footage and don't know if there's anything there.

The highlight for me, however, was shooting my favorite VMAN/Ford Model finalist, Aiden Andrews. I've shot Aiden at many shows this week and I'm certain we'll be seeing alot of him this summer over in Europe. Along with new favorite faces Jonas Kesseler, Matthew Hitt, Jerome, James Hampson and Jakob Hybholt.

VMAN Ice Skating

So I shot the VMAN ice-skating party over at Chelsea Piers the other night. Either you saw for yourself, or perhaps you've heard, or maybe you're completely un-aware, but ya, I basically bit it and smashed my camera. Ugh. It's salvageable. Unlike the bruise on my hip or the bump on my head.

Jamie Jewitt: The Movie

I was planning on breaking up all Jamie's backstage footage in to segments for "The Jamie Jewitt Show." However, as all the queens backstage have been whining to me about how they want to see more, I've decided to just string a bunch of clips together for a little movie. A quick glimpse in to how much fun there is to be had backstage.

Marc Jacobs FW 09

So I have minimal photos from Marc's show, as I was having so much fun with my video cam, I couldn't be bothered to shoot alot of pics. As usual, backstage was a blast (minus the strictly enforced non-smoking policy.) However Lara Stone and I managed to make it work. Played with Hannelore and Natasha V, who I ended up passing the camera off to. You'll see that later.

Mostly I just cruised around, caught up with anyone I hadn't seen, video-ed and shot the girls chillin out. Guido was far too busy to play so I hung with Bryanboy who had not even begun to process that he was backstage at Marc Jacobs. It was like Mecca. I had to pinch myself everytime I saw him cause I still just could not believe he made it to New York.

Raquel was there! So I caught up with her for a bit and then decided to hit the front house where the mood was so calm and relaxed. I did manage to grab a couple people before moving to the pit but mostly from this show I've got video.

Zegna FW 09

Zegna was a blast! And FYI- the funnest shows to shoot (girls or boys) are when there's a lot of time to hangout before the madness ensues. Which is usually the bigger shows where the models call times can be hours ahead of the show. Andrew Weir does an amazing job with the casting and I finally got to meet Vlad's brother Andrey who I've covered, but never met.

With over 50 models cast, Zegna offered a wide variety to choose from. With everyone from Thiago and Sean O'pry to Cole Mohr and Cesar Casier. Who I shot at Dior Homme last summer and LOVE! And even a guest appearance by my boy Simon Nessman, before rushing to catch a flight to LA. I had a hell of a time with the lighting backstage, so unfortunately my pics are all crap. So just know guys, if you didn't make the cut, it's my photography not you. You all looked great.

The funnest moment for me, however, (and I love when this happens) is when the models (girls as well) get star struck. "JD will you take a picture of me with Tyrese?" (Who is now represented by New York Models.) It always cracks me up and even some of the coolest cats joined in for a photo-op while the paps went crazy.

Marc Jacobs Show

Okay, so here's my Marc Jacobs video drama. After wrapping up backstage I was told I could shoot in the pit if I wanted and since my ride was watching the show I figured I might as well stay and join in. So...video-ed, video-ed, video-ed...got a cramp in my shoulder...video-ed some more. And then after much struggle finally got the video uploaded on to YouTube.

Only to log on the next day and find that it had been removed due to "violation of terms and agreement." What?!? Was Marc sitting in his hotel on YouTube having footage banned from the net?

So I asked around yesterday backstage and apparently you can not upload a "full-show" of anything. Not Friends, not Letterman, nothing. So, as this video is too long and I'm rushing to the tents , here's a (very raw) glimpse for all you Marc Jacobs junkie's out there in the world who just wanna get an idea of what the show looked like.

I can, however, tell you that the show was very mellow and low-key. NO celebs (which I loved) and the whole atmosphere was very relaxed and subdued. It was a nice change and I loved it.

OH! And P.S. I have a YouTube page now where you can see all the vids from this week in one spot.

Giorgio Armani

So I popped by the Armani boutique opening uptown last night and oh my god what a night! I arrived early to get my bearings and was told I would be given a spot on the red carpet as I was one of a handful of photographers, who would be walked through the event and given private access for a whopping ten minutes. So, I thought I'd give it a whirl.

However after 2 seconds of dealing with the pap's, I quickly forfeited my spot (a surprisingly good one) to a nice gal I'd chatted-up in line who was not so lucky. Not my cup of tea at all. So I decided to stick it out in the cold and just wait to be escorted in.

And thank God I did! I scored ALL the shots (with the exception of Alicia Keys who looked amazing) and never dreamed I'd get Victoria Beckham to stop for my lens! Liam Neeson, Milla Jovovich, Mira Sorvino, Josh Hartnett, Chace Crawford, Marcus Schenkenberg, Mario Testino, Ricky Martin, Hamish Bowles, James Penfold, and many, many more!

Go to V for pics! And click below for me standing outside freezing, bored, with my video cam waiting to go in and shoot.

That's Josh Hartnett you see back in the distance being photographed towards the end of the video.

Security

I was amazed when I first started shooting backstage about what pricks guys working security could be. I've learned how to deal with them since, but it can be alot like getting an asshole cop. However, this is Rene from Long Island who mans the backstage exit up at the tents. I've smoked many a smoke watching him deal with crazies from all over the world. He's way chill.

Chanel Iman

I've loved Chanel Iman since Day 1! She's fresh, fun, and loves being in front of the camera.

Like Aggy, she's one of those quintessential girls that hit the scene and you think "Of course there's a Chanel Iman. What has the world been doing all this time without a Chanel Iman?"

So when I bumped in to her down in the bathroom at Marc the other night I had to get some shots!

Y-3

LOVE LOVE LOVE Y-3! Love the clothes, love the food, love shooting it and most of all Pat and Eugene are there which always makes for a lively backstage. This year we had Mila, Veronica Webb and Kanye West (though I still can't figure out what he has to do with fashion.) And a whole slew of hip-hopsters whose names I'll never know.

Naty was there, who I love, and I spent a good part of the time backstage doing little "mini" fashion shoots with her. Stas joined in for a whole series of shots and the two of them are so hysterical together so I'm gonna wait and post those separately. The highlight however was Sasha (who was in rare form) running around with these crazy-ass glasses.

Andrew Weir did a great job with the casting. New face Jakob Hybholt (top) from Denmark, who mark my words is gonna kill it. And one of my favorite faces from Gucci last summer Jonas Kesseler who I think has such a great look.

Backstage Alexander Wang

So I'm standing backstage at Alexander's show watching the girls bop around, thinking I wish there was a way everyone could see how fun it was. And then it hits me, "Duh! Video!?!" Calvin Klein Men's

I don't know what possessed me to think I wouldn't be blogging this week. Especially when Italo had told me last month he was showing in New York this season as opposed to Milan. It's actually the only reason I got out of bed this morning. That and Jamie Jewitt. Who has officially become my new favorite model.

The collection was beautiful as always. And like Francisco with the women's line, I think Italo has done a great job maintaining the Calvin Klein aesthetic. Uber chic, this collection, and the guys all looked great.

And as usual they had all the best. Alan Carey, Reid, Blaine, Blake Kutcha, Courtney from Fusion and my man Joey Kirchner making his New York fashion week debut. And who, by the way, is responsible for more hits to this blog than anyone I've ever covered.

Dennis Johnson

If I wasn't in love with New York Models' Dennis Johnson before, I certainly am now. Not just because he's beautiful to look at, but because there I was standing on the corner freezin' my ass off tryin' to hale a cab and up pulls Dennis. With a driver.

Alexander Wang

OMG Alexander Wang was off the hook! Being bound to advertisers, I've never been able to cover his show. So last-night was officially my first. SO much fun. The music, the clothes, the Hooters girls serving BBQ chicken wings. I fucking loved it!

And such a great casting! Catherine, Anja, Natasha and Freja mixed with Karlie, Hanne and Anna Seleneva. Along with Hannelore (who I love), Christina Kruse, Trish Goff and my girl Natasha V. Lily (who's always down for some good tunes) had me in stiches rockin' out to Guns and Rose's. Only problem was I was having so much fun watching her I didn't get my lens cap off til the end of her set.

Anna popped backstage and amidst all the black tights, tube-tops, fuck-me pumps and fur, a couple of us tried to imagine her in the clothes. Only, them being straight, and me visualizing from a more editorial stand point, they unfortunately took me to a place I didn't want to go. So after throwing up just a little bit in my mouth, I decided to hit up the Hooter's girls for more wings and hit the road.

Happy Valentine's Day!!

I can't think of a better person to spend Valentine's Day with than Behati.

Patrik Ervell

Day 2 and another season with Patrik Ervell over on the west side. And to be honest I had no idea how I was gonna cover his show this season. Could I go on one more time about how "flawlessly executed" his designs are or how "precise" his tailoring is? Is everyone as tired of hearing me say that as I am typing it? Well. I'm sorry. But it's true.

I will say I definitely saw a softer Patrik with this collection. Less technical and more comfortable. And I like the way he's evolved yet maintained the integrity of his design. I mean, come on, he used a girl in his show. If that isn't change I don't know what is.

So, let's talk about the other thing I love about his shows. The casting. John Tan does a great job and Patrik has always had a sharp eye when it comes to picking boys. Stephan (who I love), this new kid Clinton from Request and this other new kid called Lucas who I'd never seen. Oh! And can someone please tell me who the girl was? I had such a good time shooting her I forgot to get her name or who she's with.

Backstage Lacoste

One of my favorite shows to shoot each season is Lacoste. Which is surprising because not only is it early, but because it's my first show at the tents, I make it even harder by waiting til THAT morning to get my credentials for the week. BUT, it's still one of my favorite shows. It's so chill and relaxed and usually none of us are even awake (ie..the bed head.) And, they always use fresh young face which makes for a fun backstage.

I can't think of a better way to spend Valentine's than with, first, Behati (who's sort of a Lacoste tradition for me,) my girl Tanya D (who I started backstage with) and my pal Matvey (who I j'adore.) Throw Ali, Alyona and Yulia up in there and you've got a fun way to spend the morning.

Mikus and Vlad

With my man Victor Glemaud showing right down the street from Rag and Bone, I decided to pop by and check out he and Camilla Staerk's presentation on the rooftop over at Milk. I wasn't there 5 minutes and Mikus and Vlad (THE Vlad) decided to get crazy with the camera.

They shot ten minutes of wild footage, which was basically the two of them running around trying to get away with as much as they possibly could. And always coming up against a female staffer who always gave in to their charm. It was hysterical to watch.

But, of course, what would my fashion week be without some sort of technological drama? (I swear I'm jinxed.) The little "crappy point-and-shoot?" The one I just said the other day had become "handy?" Well, it's not letting me upload videos now. Not all videos, just the ones it decides to give me.

Ugh! Always something, no?

Rag and Bone

Okay, so forget all that shit I said earlier about not blogging this week. What was I thinking? Most definitely the hangover talking. Though I can't guarantee you're gonna hear from me everyday, I'll try to smack some shit up here when I can. And as I pretty much have carte blanche to do whatever I want, I figure I'll just shoot the boys. I did miss Men's after all.

First day, first show, Rag and Bone. And I can't believe I never shot this show. And such a great line-up of girls. Freja, Julia Stegner, Coco, Lily, Jourdan (who I'm still obsessed with) Edita (love) Heidi Mount, Stam, Kasia, Maryna, Ali Stephens...However as much as I love the girls, it was really the boys that made my day.

And this show had ALL the boys. Lenz, Julien, Matvey, Matt Benstead (love), VNY's new boy Thomas, my favorite VMAN Contest runner-up Aiden and the always hot Danny Schwarz. (Though I do love me some Jamie Jewitt.) Chill backstage, chill first day. And just like that, I'm back.

Fashion Week

Okay bitches! It's on! New York Fashion Week has arrived. And kicking it all off is Paul Rowland with a gallery exhibition that turned out to be just the pick-me-up I needed. And not soon enough!

I have to admit I had no idea how I was gonna get through this week. First the weather, then the economy and of course this being my sixth season of New York fashion certainly doesn't help. But thank GOD it turns out all I needed was a room full of beautiful people to get me goin and now I'm all fired up.
Of course it could've been the Red Bull haze I smoked myself in to at the beginning of the night.

EVERY-body was out last-night! All the Women and Supreme hotties, my buddy Greg Kessler, Cecilia Dean, Hannelore, Louie, Mohammed, my favorite French hottie Vincent LeCrocq, the one and only Louise Pederson, Craig McDean, Behati and Jamie, a red-headed Vlada, Adam Senn, Isabeli, Hanne, Georgia...the list goes on.

AND, as much fun as I had last-night, I'm afraid I've got some bad news (actually, maybe you should sit down for this.) Okay, here it goes. Basically, I'm sitting this season out. YIKES!! (I know.) Yes, it's a total bummer but the truth is I've got so much happening OFF the computer backstage this season I just won't have time to blog. And having just turned 41, and officially an old man, I'm just not up for a week of no sleep, no eating, and all-nighters of writing and uploading film. I just can't.

I will however be covering a few parties over on the V site. And who knows perhaps throughout the week may even be inspired to do a few posts. So, until then, Happy Fashion Week everybody!

Hello Kitty

M.A.C's John Demsey and Stephen Gan co-hosted a party over on the west side last night. Froze my tits off gettin over there but it turned out to be a blast. Ciara, Lindsay Price, Cecilia Dean, Derek and Fabiola, Ari's wife from Entourage (?) and a handful of favorite people I hadn't seen in awhile.

Or met. Like The City's Adam Senn. Which, I'm loving that show btw. It's fun seeing NYC and those douche-bags from The Hills are certainly a testament to what a great job MTV does with editing. Apparently Adam skipped shows last summer so this was the first time I'd actually ever laid eyes on him. And I'm sorry but his girlfriend is a breath of fresh air from those bitches out in LA.

The highlight for me, however, was catching up with Behati and Jamie Strachan. And then of course all my favorite fashion boys who've just rolled in to town and lookin to get wild. Or free liquor. Julien Sabaud, Baptiste, Rogier, Terron, The Davenport's Lenz, Theo, this boy from Gucci who's name I always forget, Steve Gold...the list goes on.
